How to join MOVE?
I am always looking for talented students with research interests in movement analytics, modeling and visualization for human mobility, health, and movement ecology applications. Depending on your stage, here are different ways to join the MOVE Lab:
Postdoctoral scholars
If you are interested in a postdoc opportunity, please send me (sdodge@ucsb.edu) your CV and a cover letter (max 2 pages) describing your background and research interests, and how you are hoping to contribute to the MOVE lab. I am looking for talented postdocs with expertise and interest in either of these areas: human mobility, movement ecology, GIScience with a focus on movement data analytics, spatial data science, cartography and visualization, agent-based modeling, GeoAI, and spatial cognition.
Graduate students
If you are interested in joining the UCSB Geography graduate program and have an interest in movement data analytics, modeling and visualization for human mobility, health, and movement ecology applications, I would like to work with you. It would help if you send me your CV and a cover letter (max 2 pages) describing your background and research topics that you like to focus on during your graduate program.
Undergraduate students
The MOVE Lab provides many undergraduate research opportunities. If you are interested in getting involved in research with the MOVE lab, please send me (sdodge@ucsb.edu) your resume (including information on your major and GPA), your unofficial transcript, an 1 page about your background and research experience, if applicable. I am looking for students with knowledge of Python, R, or Java programming. Familiarity with GitHub and Web programming is desired. I am looking for students who are majoring in one of these areas: Geography/GIScience, data science, computer science, or statistics.

Here are a list of opportunities that you can apply for to engage in an undergrad research or acquire a funded internship with the MOVE Lab. Please contact me (sdodge@ucsb.edu), if you are interested in pursuing any of these opportunities.
- Faculty Research Assistance Program (FRAP): If you wish to earn upper division units for research, this is a fantastic way to gain research experience. The requirements are a minimum 3.0 GPA and junior unit standing (90 units or above). Also, you must have completed two upper division Geography courses.
- Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) Grant: A great opportunity for undergrads to pursue their passion and work on a funded research. For more information on the eligibility, requirements, and to apply, please visit URCA grant page. Application deadline: November 20, 2020.
- CAMP – California Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Research Program: The Summer CAMP program will run from June 21 – August 21, 2021. For more information on the program and application deadlines, please see this page. Application deadline: 30 April 2021.
- CAMP – California Alliance for Minority Participation Academic Year Research Program: For more information about the eligibility, program requirements, and to apply, please see this page. Application deadlines: 18 October for Fall quarter, 15 January for Winter Quarter, 18 April for Spring quarter.
